Week 1 of Learning Hindi as an Adult

Learning Hindi as an adult at 49 years of age has been fun, humbling, and interesting. I am using two different apps – Duolingo and Ling – to see which is better for learning, and this is part of the 300 goals journey.

Struggling with Pronunciation

I survived my first week of learning Hindi as an adult. I am struggling with some of the pronunciation but slowly getting there. My daughter thinks I am summoning something sometimes as I’m saying the same thing repeatedly to try and get it right.

I will succeed and I will conquer my greatest nemesis; the word ‘hai’, No matter how I try I can’t seem to get it to like me.

Duolingo vs Ling – Which App works better for Me?

This week I used both Duolingo and Ling. Duolingo seems to concentrate on letters, sounds and text. Where Ling concentrates more on words and phrases.

I prefer Ling as I find it more entertaining to learn words and phrases rather than sounds, but will keep at them both and see what sinks in.

Fun things I learnt this Week

I did find it interesting that some words translate to English easily like China is Cheen, and Japan is Jaapaan. But other things like ‘i’ sounds like ‘e’.

Hindi Phrase of the Week
